No one has found a solution to declining birth rates in Western culture.

Cash incentives and tax deductions don’t work.

Right-wing lecturing on the value of marriage goes nowhere.

We can’t blame lack of social safety nets, as Northern European countries with the richest social benefits like universal health and child care and rich parental leave have among the lowest birth rates worldwide.

We need a deep culture change that helps young people feel safe in their instincts to embrace what both the literature finds and millennia of human experience proves out:

Child-rearing is the most satisfying of human experiences, and people who are parents are the happiest among us.

I have a working theory that researchers have yet to explore:
